hi
when i brought my 3 year old mbk his old owner said to feed him 2 large mice a week.i was advised that this was to much for an adult snake so iv been feeding him 1 large mouse evry 2 weeks.
does that sound like enough ?
there are some pics in pic section of him. i havnt been able to weigh him yet.

| My adults get an XL mouse every 14 days. I would say if he's around 400+ grams you could move him up to one jumbo every 2 weeks. |

No a jumbo/XL mouse is the same thing.
Generally any mouse over 30g is considered jumbo or XL. |

| I have to agree with Deadmansfinger. If your snake is 3 years old, it is an adult and could more than likely handle a jumbo/XL mouse. Just remember that if you are giving him that size, kick it back to every 14 days to avoid your MBK becoming overweight and unhealthy. :) |

| This has been worrying me too, how do I know im feeding my king right? e.g when should i go up a size, should i try a variety of foods? is there a good rule to follow i.e, at this age/at this weight = u should feed ..... My brooks is 54 grams 23 inch and 6 months old and I am worried im not feeding him enough or right size as he is still growing. I feed him one fluff+calcium powder every saturday as the SHOP advised me to do. Most care sheets advise this, but the Fluffs in sealed pouches I buy all seem quite different in size, some dnt have any 'fur' on atall and much rather look like pinkies! is this common? |

You don't need the calcium powder, snakes get all the nutrients they need from the mice.
Food sizes vary alot. My female hypo greyband got her first small mouse last week and she is 70g. At 54g what you are feeding sounds right. What I would do is try him on 2 fuzzies next. If he takes them and doesn't regurge stick to that each week till he's big enough to move to either large fuzzies or smalls. |

| Cheers thats a gr8 help. Right so i am under feeding then so if he takes two fluffs do that till hes big anouth to go on to small mouse about 70 grams. My next question what best way to feed him two fluffs one sitting' 2 over 2 day's' an hour apart. |

| One after the other. As soon as he finishes one give him the next and you're not underfeeding at all, you may find he won't take 2, all snakes are different. |

Just wanted to also mention that King and Milk snakes are able to handle larger meals easier than other snakes. The reason is because in the wild, they also eat other snakes...which, as you can imagine, takes up a huge space in their tummies. A good way to gauge whether you are underfeeding your snake is to go by the girth method. Basically, if you feed your snake a prey item that is close to or slightly larger than the biggest girth area of your snake (the belly area), the proper size should leave a nice, visible lump. If you feed an item and there is no visible lump, you definitely need to move up in sizes or possibly try feeding two of the item you're currently feeding.
However, if the item you feed leaves a lump that is grotesquely large, it is possible the snake won't be able to digest the meal before it goes bad in it's stomach....therefore causing a regurg. You want to try to avoid regurges as much as possible...because it is a very harsh thing on the snake's digestive system. Snakes' stomach acids are very, very strong...so if it must upheave it's dinner, the acid goes along with it and burns the lining of their throat. |
