Are corn snakes generally more placid than kings? Our king was terrible to get out of his viv and always used to rattle his tail, slither away and musk us, whereas our corn is so quiet and has made no attempt to musk, bite or escape from us. Didnt know if it was normal for corns to be so laid back

Each snake has its own personality and will react differently to the next snake. Even a corn has the ability to be aggressive, but it is generally the case that they are docile and far from aggressive.

The same goes for Kings, they have a reputation for being nippy and aggressive but it really does depend on the individual. My King in particular is becoming a real softy and will allow me to hold its head without a fight, it will also happily let me tickle its chin without any objection.

Same here, Bio, and it got so I started to worry about Shadow and wanted her to do something king-like so that I'd know she was ok. In the end she just showed me she was very strong -- grips with much more force than my corns -- and that when she really wants to, she can move faster than any snake I've seen face to face so far, which include all of mine and some in the wild.

As for musking, the only one that has graced me so far in this way is one of our corns.

Both of my older 2 kings are absolute softies and never hiss, strike or musk (they're both 07's). My two 09 hatchlings are a bit feistier. Claire doesn't strike but will rattle her tail and musk. Jafar will actually strike as well as tail rattle and musk but I'm certain that they will both settle cos once they're out they are fine

The mental corn is now a big softie, just needed regular handling and proper care. Previous owners must have neglected it I think

I have no idea really, but if it was poo it was a strange one, not like any cornsnake poo I've seen. He hasn't done that since, probably because I told him straight away that next time he does that I'll return the favour!

This is something that i looked into some time ago when i saw either a question on TCS or the darkside.

I came up with this passage from the included link.

'A more common response from corn snakes when threatened is the release of musk. All rat snakes produce a foul-smelling musk and release it on the predator if they are picked up, spreading the musk around with their tail. The musk acts as a deterrent, and also simulates the smell of a dead snake to predators.'
