The girls (Shadow and Ultra, two beautiful 3 months old MBKs) arrived Friday and went into their new homes, where they have three "proper" hides each, plus some artificial folliage to create aditional hidey places and generally make it more iteresting for them.
Since then, Shadow has been very busy digging right under the substrate (aspen) so much so, that she managed at some point to remove ALL of it(!) from one corner of the warm end and make a mound elsewhere. Warm end temps are usually 28.5-33, cool end at room temp, but I was wondering if she was (a) seeking more heat, (b) want the substrate to be a bit deeper, (c) behaving perfectly normally for a king?
Ultra, on the other hand, likes to rest right outside her cool end or right at the front corner of the warm end, in plain sight and hardly hidden at all, I wonder if this means she's feeling comfortable and pleased about her set up?

Thanks Jono. Your mentioning feeding time reminded me my youngest boy's question, the day after the new snakes arrived: "Mummy, when can we get tagged?" ...in the same voice he uses to ask when can he have a doughnut.

Sounds like normal king behaviour to me. Jasmine always makes a mound of aspen in the entrance to her hides |

Carl, i would never of switched to kitchen roll if it were my snake, i love watching it digging and as it does it so much i think it must really enjoy it as well. It just means a quick substrate straightening is needed when i change the water, not much work. :)
It is amazing how much kings do love to dig, sometimes mine travels completely 'underground' so i can just see the substrate moving like a scene from tremors! :P |
