Well it was feeding day yesterday so I fed my boas first and they all struck as usual. Sylar continued his good behaviour and took 3 rat pups. Its great how gently he takes food from the tongs. Then it came to feeding the new king.
Chaz at snakesnadders was feeding her one fuzzy a fortnight just as a maintenance diet and as she is just settling in I wasn't sure that she would eat. Anyway, I defrosted one fuzzy for her and she grabbed it straight away but got the wrong end. After 5 minutes of struglling and not managing to get it in her mouth she gave up so I tried to get it back using the tongs. She decided that she wanted it too much though and struck again and coiled round it and wouldn't let go. Only problem was she had covered its head in her coils and couldn't work out what to do next and didn't want to let go.
As she was too busy with her fuzzy to notice me I picked her up and held her in my hand. She relaxed and uncoiled a bit and ate the fuzzy in my hand.
I thought that would be enough food for her (and thats all I'd defrosted anyway) so I put her back in the faunarium and put her a new hide in. As I put the hide in I brushed the substrate with my hand and she latched on to my third finger and started constricting! Bless her, she was trying her hardest and didn't even break the skin
She let go after about a minute and I defrosted her two more fuzzies which she muched down as well, striking for both. This snake (49g) is less than half the size of Sylar (112g) yet ate the same amount of food! I'm loving her already!

Just curious, but how do you know when they're ready to move on to two feeds instead of one? Aside from her trying to munch your finger?
sorry if my questions on this site seem daft, but i'm still very new to this :) |

Sometimes you just have to try them and see. Other times you will find that they are still active around the faunarium as though they are hunting for more. When snakes have had enough to eat they generally hide away and you may not see them for another day or two. |
