Hi Everyone, I’m new to the site so first of all a hello to every here – it’s a really nice site.
Long story short my local fish shop has a Pueblan Milk snake for sale (£60) and I’ve wanted a Lampropeltis for a long-time. I came on here for a caresheet and while having a nose around the forum saw magneticblues pics of Sylar & Claire his Arizona Mountain Kings and was wowed, beautiful looking snakes! There’s a reptile store near me where I used to go when I kept tree frogs and I’m sure they’d be able to track one down for me. Care for either snake seems fairly similar, So my question is – is there much difference between them temperament wise, would the milk snake be any more friendly and make a better pet for a newbie? |

In my experience I'd say yes. My Mexican milk is a little stunner, who is very calm and easy to work with. My King on the other hand is a lot more feisty. He has calmed down an awful lot, but I 'trust' him less than the Milk.
Certain sub-species are noted for having different attitudes.....those in the getula subspecies (like my MBK) are noted for probably being the most aggressive. Also, most Milk Snakes are noted for being very shy and I've read that they can be very skittish and musk a lot.
I think I've read on this forum that the Mountain Kings are quite calm.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon. |

I have both of the species your intrested in, and id say that if your going for hatchlings the Mountain King will be the calmest. Yound Pueblans tend to be really fast and musk alot, while the young Mountain Kings dont musk at all.
On the other hand, if you get a grown on Pueblan that has been handled alot then it probs wont musk at all...They do calm down nicely!
I"d still go with the Mountain King though, as these are my favs...They stay small, never musk and are just lovely little characters!
They like to climb and have lots of hides.
In the end though i suppose it goes by what you like the most...Enjoy! |

Hmm, the plot thickens - didn't even know about the musking. The Pueblan is only small and was like grease lightening in the shop. I think my next step is to see if I can actually get hold of a mountain king and if not the decision is made for me, will keep you up to date ....and hopefully be able to post some pics soon. : )

| For a first time owner, If youre going milksnake, honestly id go with a mexican milksnake! Perfect beginer snake, never musks or bites, very calm shy snake, and looks amazing! :)! |

| Thats some good advice right there!..Of all the Milks the Mexicans do seem to be the calmest...Mine never bite or musk either, prehaps one of your local shops could order some Annulata in for you?? |

| Well, my mexican milksnake is my first and (so far) only snake, and i haven't been musked on ever,which is why id highly recommend it! so I have no idea, but im sure bluerain can help you with that question! |

I would say it smells kinda fishy!!??....The best part about it though is they kinda whip their tails around while they musk, spraying everything for a few yards...Great fun!!!
You cant keep Milkies and not get musked at least once...it all goes with young Milk territory.
Hey!..It"s no bad...bit of soap and water and you"ll smell like your old self again! |

Mmmm ..sounds lovely. Sure I can cope with that though, hopefully I can get it used to being handled so that it doesnt do it too often. Must be a laid back snake you have there Ipbldg18. Thanks bluerain.
Am going to see the guy about availability of the Arizona kings on saturday, think it's unlikely he'll be able to get a youngster though, where as the Pueblan is tiny - would be kinda cool to watch him grow up. |

As much as I have a passion for Milksnake's, If you were to get a hatchling Milksnake, Pueblans would be at the end of the list. From my experience they are most scittish and seem to have the power to musk more often then other sub-species.
I would reccomend Sinaloan, Nelson and Mexican Milksnakes for beginngers. Honduran's is an other option, although rather then musking when young, they prefer to bite.

I got Claire and Sylar when they were both very young and neither has been in the least bit feisty. When young they do tend to musk a bit but have never shown an ill temrement, they are both little softies. I do have a desert king though which is an entirely different story lol. From my experience the Arizona mountain kings are calm and friendly |
