Hey everyone,
I'm a brand new owner of a Mexican Black. He's not very big, just over 12 inches and about as thick as a pencil or a tiny bit more so. I just got him on Monday so this may be him trying to feel secure, but my snake is constantly burrowed. He comes out for very rare times, and I've been up until 5 a.m. the past two days and have hardly seen him come out so it's not likely he emerges when I have slept. Is this normal? |

| Welcome to the forum. You have mentioned that you are a brand new owner so I'm assuming you've had your snake for only a short period of time. If this is the case then I'm sure your snake will become more active once it's settled in. Have you provided your snake with hides? |

| Yes, I've only had had him for two days so far, but I have provided him with 3 hides, 2 small ones that would make him feel secure, and one larger fake hollowed out log that he can bask on. |

As magneticblue says give it a bit of time to settle he needs to get used to his new surroundings.
Can you give us details of what setup you have got for your snake, ie size of viv as this can sometimes make them feel insecure if it is too big and open for them.

Hey, sorry for the delay, i've been down with Strep throat recently.
Well the tank is 36" long, 12" wide, and about 15" high. Like I said I forget what kind of substrate it is. It's red and kind of woodchip looking in appearance. I've got a small tupperware for water, a hollowed out fake log on the hot side, and a big plastic bush type thing on the cooler end. He burrows underneath the bush daily and rarely comes out. I've also put in a paper towel cardboard roll. It's log and sort of thin, so he can crawl into if he wishes. I've got a 100 Watt Infrared heat lamp ontop as well as a heating pad underneath the same side.

Hi there. Is the heating equipment controlled by thermostats?
Also for a snake that small a 36' viv is massive. You might be better putting him in a faun until he's a bit bigger, and heat that with the heat mat.
Well done on choosing a Mexi Black though.....they're great snakes. |

It's not actually. I have a thermostat at each end of the tank. Regularly the temperatures in the hot end are from 86-96 an the cool end from 60-75. I check them twice a day. The moisture is at 40-50 constantly. He's really comfortable eating with me standing over the tank watching, so I'm hoping he'll get over biting soon after I start to handle him.
Unfortunately this is the only tank I have as of now, but I can see where the size is too big, though I rarely see him as he is nearly almost always burrowed. |
