I have just bought a vivarium to house my juvenile Nelsons milksnake, at the moment he is in a plastic box with kitchen roll on the floor, when he goes into the viv what would be the best substrate to use? i was thinking either aspen shavings or orchid bark chippings, i would like the viv to look as natural as possible, but wondered which is best from the snakes point of view.
I would go with aspen. Orchid Bark can retain humidity, and has also been known to carry mites. I have all my snakes on aspen, and they all seem to enjoy tunneling in it. It's also easier to spot waste on aspen
