Hi there, I read that king snakes take their heat from their surroundings though you dont necessarily need to have a heat lamp . I know this sounds silly but i did think that snakes took the heat from their belly though some do need high humidity levels. Does it just depend on where they originate from or is there another reason?

I would think so- snakes from warmer climates will be used to hot air being all around, wheras those from cooler climates would get used to finding somewhere warm and soaking it up from direct contact.

Although in vivs I don't think it matters whether the heat comes from above or below as long as you find the most suitable for your type of snake. Corns and kings are ok with heat mats, wheras large bodied snakes likes boas and pythons are more suited to ceramics etc.

Hi KK,

Not sure what the question is here, but i'll try and answer something! Snake in captivity need the heat from below to digest there meals easier. That being said, Snakes from different enviroments for example Milksnakes in California deal with great heat, obviously the ambient temperature is going to relativly high, but snakes bask on rocks which hold the heat for longer.

As Kaz said, larger snakes are better with Ceramics or Radiators, not because there any different. I think it comes down to the housing. It's a hell of alot easier heating a 4x2ft (8ft Squared) vivarium with a Ceramic then are a large Heatmat.

Hopefully I asnwered your question, if there was even a question?

Scott
