where is the best place to have the sensor i have a 20watt mat in a 36" viv for my milk snake i have the sensor just above the substrate at the warm end the viv heats up 27c but that seems to be as hot as it gets which i know is with the recommended but its at the bottom end of the recommended heat would rather ahve a happy medium temp although its probably warmer inside the hide and the headings not on in the bedroom atm maybe that's it

Flick, I'm getting a bit confused here: are you asking about the thermostat probe as the title says, or about the thermometer probe, as your post suggests?

If you're asking about the stat, attach the probe to the heatmat.

If you're asking about the thermometer, well, I put my warm end probe right at the bottom, below the substrate. This is because my MBKs spend a lot of their time under the substrate making tunnels, so they are bound to come into contact with the bottom of the viv.

sorry i tend it go off on a tangent i am talking about the thermostat probe as in the leflet it says place it 9 inches above the substrate. but am thinking is that more for lizards ect?

so you say it should be touching the heat Matt ?

GP i am using coco bark. altho i think it was just a cold bedroom as the heatings on now and its amde a huge differance

thin out the coco bark above the heatmat although keeping it a bit thicker in the rest of the viv will enable him to burrow and play
and place the probe on top of the substrate above the heat mat. i usually hold the probe down with a nice piece of heavy decor like a rock or something.

i rubber-band my stat and thermometer probes together so i get an accurate reading, and set the stat according to what the therm says rather than reading the temp off the dial on the stat.
