Posted - 06/07/2012 : 15:07:27 hi
when i brought my 3 year old mbk his old owner said to feed him 2 large mice a week.i was advised that this was to much for an adult snake so iv been feeding him 1 large mouse evry 2 weeks. does that sound like enough ?
there are some pics in pic section of him. i havnt been able to weigh him yet.
thanks in advance

Posted - 28/10/2012 : 16:41:08 My 6 year old gets 1 large mouse every 14 days, otherwise he becomes a porker and if I feed every week, he turns his nose up, most unkingly king ever. The bump thing kinda becomes pointless once they are nearing adult age imo otherwise you would end up getting a fat snake! |

Posted - 14/08/2012 : 21:08:14 My king is almost 3 years old, Florida King, and is on 2 x/s rats and a couple of rat pups every other week. I will try him on small rat in a couple of weeks, nothing else.
I would suggest you move him to at least an x/s rat and maybe try a couple every other week. I feel that you need to see what he likes and just make sure that he is not getting fat.
I weigh my snake every 3 months.

Posted - 07/07/2012 : 11:57:05 One small mouse doesn't leave a bump at all on my DK, but two leaves a huge one. I think I'll see if my local shop stocks medium mice and go for one of something in between. |

Posted - 06/07/2012 : 21:11:36 Just wanted to also mention that King and Milk snakes are able to handle larger meals easier than other snakes. The reason is because in the wild, they also eat other snakes...which, as you can imagine, takes up a huge space in their tummies. A good way to gauge whether you are underfeeding your snake is to go by the girth method. Basically, if you feed your snake a prey item that is close to or slightly larger than the biggest girth area of your snake (the belly area), the proper size should leave a nice, visible lump. If you feed an item and there is no visible lump, you definitely need to move up in sizes or possibly try feeding two of the item you're currently feeding.
However, if the item you feed leaves a lump that is grotesquely large, it is possible the snake won't be able to digest the meal before it goes bad in it's stomach....therefore causing a regurg. You want to try to avoid regurges as much as possible...because it is a very harsh thing on the snake's digestive system. Snakes' stomach acids are very, very strong...so if it must upheave it's dinner, the acid goes along with it and burns the lining of their throat. |

Posted - 06/07/2012 : 20:42:04 One after the other. As soon as he finishes one give him the next and you're not underfeeding at all, you may find he won't take 2, all snakes are different. |
