Hi, I am new to Snakes.

I do have a question. Im in UK and there appears to be a lack of Common King Snakes out there (all I can find are Californian Kingsnakes (which should make them common)).

I am looking at a pair of Common Kingsnakes to buy but I am worried that I may not be able to pass on (sell) their offspring.

Can anyone help?

Hi, Just want to update everyone on my Kings. They are doing well, not so skinny now. Ive uploaded some new photographs of the female. She is now taking bigger mice (next from fuzzy). Her brother is still taking fuzzys but I feel he may take smaller of the next size up! I have some lovely skins from my snakes sheds! Was great to actually sit and watch one shed!

Photos are at below link.

as above, desert phase mbk means nothing to me, I am pretty sure these are integrades.

Abbarent markings are normal in kingsnakes, I have 1. But you cannot get an abbarent snake that naturally has a solid colour such as the MBK.

Pretty much what stapey said...

^^ that is an MBK. Yours are def not an MBK. The guys talkin out his bum bum

"Deseert phrase" and abbrant are a fancy way to say your snake is mbk cross another type of king such as a cali for example. They are not pure mbk or any special type of markinsg, just two different species of kings. I would question what they ment by normal king though! Normal cali, speckly kings

You may indeed find it hard to pass off their offspring as they are not a pure mbk or any other form of king.

Hi, just had info from pet shop i got snakes from...

They say,
"Hi, your Mexican black king snake is an 'aberrant' - so a divergence from the normal uniform black kingsnakes with yellow markings. Both the parents to this snake are 'normal'. Aberrant markings are common in kingsnakes. This is often called a 'desert phase' of the Mexican black."

Does this make any sense??

Im not 100% sure on this as the snakes are a bit small in the photos, but they look like they could be goins kingsnakes to me but dont take my word for it.

AS kd has said will be worth going back to the shop and finding out what they know about these snakes.

They are gorgeous and I wouldnt mind having one like it if I had more room and time. I'm not sure if there would be any difference in price. I could also be very wrong with my guess as to what they are as I am not very experienced with kings. Corns have been more my thing up til now. I just couldn't find any alternative version of an MBK other than a solid black one when I looked on google.
I'm not sure where else you could take them to find out. You could go back to wharf and just tell them that someone had questioned that they were aberant MBKs and that you couldn't find anything other than black MBKs online, see what they say.

Does anyone know where I could take them to find out? or could it be difficult to find out what they are?

(sorry, just got up and still tired lol)
PaulW156 Posted - 05/08/2011 : 08:02:31
Oh, right. I think I will have to pop in again. But they are lovely snakes.
kdlang Posted - 04/08/2011 : 23:04:32
i'm not very good with kings but they look more like desert or florida kings. I could be way off tho.

I usually use wharf aquatics and the staff in there are pretty good, although if they sold you these as MBK's I would be questioning them
Gmac Posted - 04/08/2011 : 22:17:04
very nice looking Kings, and like the markings. But these are not MBK's.

If i have done this right then the following link should take you to my photos of my two MBKS.

http://photobucket.com/paulw156

They are both around 1 foot (not accuratly measured them as only got them today). they are brother and sister. The male is very adventurous and curious where as the female is, well all she has really done is hide away, probably lady like.

Even though i read that really i should not feed them for 3 days after purchase they were really active enough. so the pet shop man at Walf Aquatics said I would probably be able to feed them today. So i did. the male struck quickly when offered a fuzzy and swollowed just as quick. The female turned her nose away a for a few minutes. Then she struck at the fuzzy. She would not eat it until i stopped watching but she guarded her prey!

I am so please with my two family members. Even though i really wanted BLACK kings. lol

will e nice seeing the photos. I'm interested in the abbarent part, mexis are just the one colour with no visable pattern that i have noticed. Abbarent normally refers to the pattern.

Hi kdland.

The one with the GOOD REP is Walf Aquatics in Pinxton. I'm in Belper, nr Derby. and the one with the bad rep is close by. lol

Ive just got myself two Aberrant Mexican Blacks. lovely colours. Will post some pics when they are settled in. They are about one foot long and are brother and sister. I know I cant breed them but in time I may get another one. Till then ill learn to look after these two. The male is quite adventurous and the female is currently in hiding! lol

Hiya and welcome to the forum. I am in Derbyshire too, where abouts are you? Which shop are you talking about with the bad rep? Rather than naming and shaming you can email me if you like
