hi,

well after weeks of sorting out my new viv its all up and running now and i have my snake in there. i changed from heat mat in the faun to ceramic bulb for heat and 60watt energy saver for light. i have 2 digital thermometers one at each end. the hot end is no problem i can get it to 30 oc but the cool end i cannot get it below 25.9 oc. is that enough of a gradient or should i change back to heat mat? its a 24" viv by the way.

thanks

It is really a little too warm in the cool end, so i would personally suggest that you would be better using a heat mat.

Just out of interest, why did you decide to switch from a mat to a ceramic for your new enclosure?

hi,

the reason i went for heat mat is the shop said heat mats for fauns and ceramic for vivs. i wasnt sure about putting a mat inside the viv so i went for ceramic. do you think if i change back to mat the overall viv temp would come down? i dont really like the look of the ceramic heater with the guard on anyway, doesnt look as neat.

thanks

heatmats are generally no problem put inside vivs, all my corns are on heatmats inside vivs (and the boas are on ceramics and a rep rad)

i would only use ceramics for larger snakes (pythons & boas) kings are better of with belly heat.

hi,

put a heat mat in now but the temps are still the same 25 cool end 29-30 hot end. the cool end drops to 21-22 once i turn the light out at night. its a 60 watt energy saver would it be any cooler if i change to a 40 watt?

thanks

i doubt the energy saving bulb is making a huge difference to the heat...........

is your house warm? have you got your central heating on a lot? and if so is it possible to turn it down in the room that your snake is in? or move the viv further away from the radiator?
alternatively you could try increasing the ventilation to see if it improves matters.........
