Brumation is so depressing, No feeding, Change Water weekly. No crazy assed Tangerine Albino Honduran chewing of your fingers for a mouse.
Anybody else going through is difficult time?

Just letting mine digest their last meal (been about 10 days now)then will turn down temps and wait out the time. Glad you started this thread Scott. As an experienced keeper I wanted to compare your thoughts with a book I read. They say you should keep kings at 15C for about 2 months, is this about right? |

They'll be a fair few late nights on this thread I imagine!
If I'm really honest with you, I don't know a huge deal about breeding the Pyro's, I'm aware they come from a colder and more harsh climate, However that being said. I would of thought they brumation period would be longer. I brumate my Milksnakes (And previously Kingsnakes (Not Pyro's or Zonata) for 5 months. Starting from November throught to March. Temperature wise, I (try) to keep mine at 12 degrees with difficulty, However with no real ideal place for them to brumate, Temperatures can flucuate from 9-15 degrees celcius.
I'm in the same process as yourself, Letting them clear there guts. Very boring time, I suppose it has some positives, Cheap Electricity Bill, Cheap Food Bill. Looks like i'll have to get some more hatchlings in!

I suspect they will be OK. In the wild they would have fluctuations in temperature so I don't think it will be a problem |

Interms of flucuations, It depends on how little or severe they can be. Ideally you want to stay 3 Degrees from the guideline temperature. It's such a hassle finding a suitable place with me.
Kind Regards, Scott |

Haven't kept or bred kings (mainly cali's) for a few years now but I just used to let mine get down to ambient room temp in an unheated room in my house (which still doesn't have central heating!). They naturally warmed up in Spring and then just got on with it, given that I kept them as pairs anyway. Late spring gave late matings etc-I know it's not conventional wisdom but it worked for me; I had pairs that bred every year once they got going and I never had one cali eat another. I was going to get some cali's again, 'cos I love them, but have come across a nice young paid of royals looking for a home so it's a change of direction but calis will always have a place in my heart... |

Nagini seems to have gone into his self-inflicted brummation already. He never eats in winter and this will be the 3 year he's turned his nose up at food voluntarily.
He stopped eating about 3 weeks ago so I'm going to try again with his favourite food (a chick) this week and if he doesn't take it I'll start lowering the temps.
I hope Hypanthia doesn't do the same though, she needs all the fat she can get. She still looks underweight to me, so if she doesn't eat over winter she might not be healthy enough to breed next year |

How do people get the temps down to a steady 15C? My room is unheated but still above 15 so the only option I can think of is to open a window. Problem is some days over the winter will be much colder so I will need to leave the ceramic heaters on and the thermostat only goes down to 19C. Any ideas gratefully received |
