My beautiful, best friend Archie (the agouti rat out of the collection) fell out with me yesterday.
I was putting ducktape in the side of the cage between the floor and the side to stop the substrate falling through to the lower level? Archie was of course interested in what I was doing, and I gently nudged him out of the way and he kept coming back and I'd gently nudge him again, then the little crap turned on me, hackles raised and bit me, it wasn't deep it was a graze because I pulled away when realising what he was going to do, then he came back for my other hand and bit me, I gently but quickly pulled away, but then he came back a third time and bit me so hard his teeth were completely in the wound and he started dragging my hand towards him whilst I was trying to pull it out, bloody hell did it hurt, and as soon as I got it out of his mouth it started pouring with blood and I swiftly got both hands out as he was coming for me again with hackles raised and looking very angry, so I shut the door and left him to it.
About 3 hours later I changed their food bowls and he was absolutely fine with me and licking the salt off my fingers and generally being really loving?
What the hell did I do wrong? Am I at risk of him attacking me again? Did the ducktape smell of food and he thought he was grabbing food off me, but why were all his hackles raised? Oh I wish there were a simple and nice explanation.
The wound is so deep it is still throbbing today. Haven't gone for a tetanus because they used to say "five for life" and I've already had my five when I was a kid, but I've not had one in the last ten years and they also used to say that you had to top up if it was longer than 10 years ago... *hmmm*
I'm gutted that my favourite ratty could do that to me.
I know you're all now going to say feed him to Simon's Royal lol |

Don't feed him to a royal! The poor rat could be in there a month before a royal decides to eat it. Send it my way, the boas will have him in no time! |

I have forgiven him and he's being as loving as ever again now So I think it was a freak incident. Either way he's not coming to you as boa food :P |
