Hi, i just stumbled upon this site researching if cali king snake bites hurt. I have been looking for a good kingsnake forum and i think i finally found one. Well enough of that. I have been the proud owner of a Chocolate colored California King since March 21st 2009. Id say hes/shes a little over a foot long. I have a 10GAL viv set up and its about aslong as the viv is. I have not handled him at all in fear that ill be bitten, he is very aggressive. It was like that when i purchased, I know i need to start handling otherwise when it gets bigger ill have a real rough time. Is there any advice you pros could give a first timer? The only time ive held it is when its feeding time and i just pick it up and place it in the feeding viv and then back home he goes. I really want to get over my fear of getting bit.

Well thanks and nice to meet everyone!

Hi welcome to the sight. I have never been bitten thankfully, but I can say I've been musked a few times lol From what I can tell on here is that it doesnt hurt its the shock of being bitten more than anything thats frightening, also if you keep a piece of clothing with your scent on it in the viv that will get him used to your smell. Another thing I do before I pick Snoop up is I gently stroke his back to let him know I'm there before I pick him up. Also I use the same Dove soap before I pick him up so he associates the smell with getting picked up. I hope this helps a little bit, I'm sure there are other tips but I cant think of any at the minute lol
Also remember the more you handle him with confidence the more he will calm down

hi and welcome,i had a aggressive king and he wouldnt let me in his viv so i started by letting him make his own way out and supporting his body then lifting him, took a few weeks to calm him dow and hes fine now,i also use to use a hook to get him out the viv once he was fine with being handle then eventuly just using my hands.

Hi and welcome. Bites don't really hurt in my experience, it is more shock that gets you. If you're worried though you can always use gloves until your snake calms down a bit

ive been bitten a couple of times by my mexi black when he was around that size and i can tell you that it doesn't hurt a bit... when they are small they cant even break the skin, its just a bit shocking... so you have no need to worry... get handling :P

Hello Jeremy

I've been bit by my kings a few times and it's not the pain but the shock that gets you. So fast

Take tyhe advice above and you'll be fine- also wear some gloves if it'll make you feel more confident?

I always allow my mexican blacks to come out of the viv on their own as they are both viv defensive, then I can pick them up fine. The Cali isn't viv defensive, but that doesn't mean your isn't either so you could always try it.

Thanks for the replies! As soon as I get home from work ill post some pics up. Its feeding day today so i might snag a pic of that. I just moved him up to fuzzies as he was woofing down two pinkies before i could wash my hands after touching them.

Im going to try to get an old shirt and cut/rip some of it and place it in the viv.

Is it a good sign that when i approach the viv he will come to me almost as if exploring who i am and my intent?

Yes- but most kings will do that anyway. They are so inquisative compaired to most other types of snake

I like it when you hoover near the viv stacks - all the other snakes hide sharpish but the kings come out to see what all the commotion is about.

Plus when Nagini escaped, we found him within 10 minutes because as we were frantically throwing stuff about he came out from behind the settee to be nosey about all the fuss

I'm still trying to persuade the wife to let me have a snake downstairs again so I can watch it exploring its viv. Needless to say it will have to be one of the kings

Mine are all in my bedroom and just before me and the OH go to bed we get to watch The Baron crawling all around his viv, watching some TV or just generally eyeing us up to see if he could eat us!
