HELP, HELP, HELP, Could someone please run through all the exact steps I need to go through to rid my son's ten month old king snake of what looks like mites! I am desperate to give 'Strangles' some relief but am very worried I might hurt him, I intend to use 'frontline' to ensure they go but need help with the detergent to use for the leaves etc in the cage and the cage walls themselves. Does olive oil do anything to help and how do I get rid of the mites on his head if I have to avoid this area with the 'Frontline'? I read the mites will be on his eyes on sensor pits, will the 'Frontline' kill the lot anyway even if I stay clear of his head and do I use kitchen paper on the bottom of the cage after and how long till I can put usual lining back in ? I know its a lot of questions but I want to get rid of them once and for all but am worried about hurting him, Please, Please, Please help me!

thankyou so much for your reply, god i never thought i would be so attatched to a little snake but i feel awful and when i looked at all your pictures i noticed you used a different cage lining and wondered what it was and what made you use that over the bits of wood the pet shop advised us to use? Thanks again for such a speedy reply!

i use aspen substrate becuase it's easier to digest if it's swollwed and is very absorbant and east to spot any mess.I dont like the wet bark you can get (orchid bark) as this can carry mites and needs to be baked first to kill anything off.

the stiff the pet shop gave me is beechwood chips (xxl would you advise me to use the stuff you have instead? i tried to get hold of 'frontline' this morning and no vet will give it to me so i had to track down one who specialises in exotics and book an appointment but at least strangles will be better soon - she also told me to get rid of any wood in the tank as they harbour mites but now he wont have anything to climb ! what do you think if i soak the climbing branch in water for couple of days ? hope i am not being a pain but only very new to snakes so any advise is very gratefully recieved as strangles is a lovely snake and i feel awful! could the snake cage have brought the mites in as i got it second hand ?

the viv probaly had eggs in,i would personly throw any would away any wood to be safe or bake it for a few hours at around 120 degrees.Your substrate is fine if thats what you like,do you feed in the viv?
Another good thing with aspen is they can make burroring tunnel in it.

Try a superstore pet store or farm shop, (here we have Just for Pets and Countrywise) they'll only ask which size (weight of animal) you need and small (3 pippette) or large (about 12 pippette)

you cant get it over the counter here either, only the one in the pepet but you need the spray. If your feeding in the viv perhaps you could just place a piece of paper down first.

should we feed him in a different container ? if so what do we do about not handling after a feed to get him back into the viv? pretty much all the pics i have seen of pet snakes feeding have been outside their viv in a tub of some kind, also could i ask you, I bought a large plastic tub to put him in whilst i scrub and dry the viv, what do i clean the plastic tub with and how long will he be ok in it without heat lamp or is this a bad idea totally or could we put the heat pad in the tub with 'strangles' overnight but I am worried he will get out of the hole i have to make to plug the pad in. Oh god i really feel like an idiot but if I dont ask I will never learn and I am totally new to all of this! Thankyou for all your help I really am very grateful.

If you feed in a tub it rules out the risk of eating substrate,if you just leave for 10-15 mins for food to go down and then gently put the snake back without excessive handling.
you can keep the snake in the tub if its secure and heat it by putting the mat under the tub, alot of people keep their snakes in tubs permently.
As for keeping pythons the only one i have had is a royal and he's a pain in the rear,no babies yet,got a couple of eggs on the go but not getting my hopes up for them as they are probably just duds as i did'nt breed her, going to breed properly next year,if i can find a female for my mexi.

i am so grateful to you for all your advise, we took strangles to the vet and she couldnt find a single trace of a mite at all but she rubbed vhim down with frontline and gave me all the stuff to do the viv! I think I saw a couple of odd shaped scales looked on the internet and panicked but better safe than sorry at least she said he was a good size and very healthy! so your mexican is a female ? are they all girls and which did you get first? what made you get the python? did you get all from babies? i saw photo of gypsy as a baby, she was about same size as strangles when we got him, isnt it really hard to breed snakes? how do you find a mate for her ? i am being nosey but i find it all really facinating.and thanks again for all your helpand for answering so quickly!
