i have an albino milk snake [4/5months old]. she's brilliant to hold and i've had no problems so far, but i'm thinking of buying moss to keep in her tank. Is this a good move? To assist the shedding proccess??

Thanks:)

well i've only had her a few days. The last time she shed was the 27th i think. so very recently. i just wondered because i know they like to burrow, and although i've given her two hides [one over the heat mat and the other over the cooler side of the tank], i've not given her anything to burrow in. I have wood chippings, and she tried getting underneath her water bowl yesterday, so i figured i'd give her something like moss to burrow and hide in?

as a cheap alternative you could try some shredded paper. moss is usually used damp to aid shedding but could raise the humidity too much which in turn could lead to scale rot or an RI. it's best left for when they're due to shed - ie. their eyes have gone blue and/or returned to normal prior to a shed.

Welcome to the site GirlHarry. Kings and milks don't really need the moss unless they have a problem shedding. Kitchen roll would probably be best for burrowing. I don't use paper myself but my king likes to burrow under his wood and make a network of tunnels so putting some paper can't do any harm

great looking snake, you could also use aspen or hemp substrate which is very good for burrowing.

okay, i'll have a nose next time i'm at a reptile store.

one thing i'm worried about though, she seems to be jumpy when i handle her [i try to do it twice a day for her to get used to handling] and seems to be scared of me. anything i can do to calm her a bit? she musked on me earlier and although i don't mind it, i'd really prefer for her not to feel so threatened by me. chances are nothing can be done, but i dont want her to stress.
any thoughts/ideas?

She'll calm down if you keep up with the handling anyway as she's still getting used to you.

You could try putting a glove or t-shirt in the viv so that she learns to feel comfortable with oyur smell. That sometims helps.

You one of the few people who doesn't mind musking- it smells awful
