Hi all,

Bit worried about Mort. Past couple of weeks he hasn’t eaten, and it’s REALLY unlike him.
He seems fine in himself, temps are fine and checked and thermostat controlled. He’s heated by a guarded infrared bulb. Haven’t moved his viv around or anything and he’s feeding in the same RUB as usual in the same room.

We’ve been slowly upping his food since we’ve had him (Feb) as he was on far too little (several pinkies at 2 n half years old!). He’s now nearing 3 and just hit over 3ft long.
He’s now on 2 mice a week and shedding frequently and regularly.

We tried him on a small weaner rat about 3 weeks ago and he give it a good go but it was just too big for him (it didnt look too big next to him, but he seemed to have trouble getting his mouth round it) and he gave in. We left him a few days and tried his mouse, which he took ok.

About 2 weeks ago, we tried him on his mouse like normal and he refused it … then realised he was in shed and he didn’t want too. This was fine, we weren’t worried.

Past two feeds he’s come up to it, struck it, coiled as usual, nearly eaten it whole then he’s just spat the whole thing out and slithered off. It’s his normal size that he’s been taking ok for a while.

Quite worried about him. Could the mice be dodgy and he’s just refusing them? Or could the rat attempt have hurt him? Although he did have one mouse after that.

He seems ok. Normal, curious etc. If he’d flat out refused I wouldn’t be as worried, it’s cos he’s rejecting them. So I think he wants them but something’s stopping him.

Any ideas?

Sorry to hear your having such problems with him. I can't help but I just wanted to offer my support. Have you tried getting some mice from another source and trying one of those.

Thanks for the support :)

Yeah we tried different mice from different places ... we did change where we got them from and we thought it was that, as he turned his nose up at one. Went back to the previous source ... and he chucked it up. We offered a smaller one too and he just didn't want to know.

Good job he put on some weight over the summer to help him through it.

lol :D

I'm glad he's not the only who's done it.

He's been doing it for weeks though and i'm worried something's damaged in him. Cos he gets all riled and chases it on the tweezers and coils it etc, then eats it .... then blargh. He's done it a few times.

My corn, Red, refused a feed the other day too, she's never missed one since we've had her.

It's took him ages to poop after it too, so I think we're not going to give him another one until the weekend. Very very slowly build him up. He seems alright, still his curious self. He did hide away fro a bit over the weekend though.

We tried him on one bigger than a small and he just can't keep it down, he eats it no problem and its goes into his belly, but within minutes he's gagging it back up. He can keep smalls down though.

How weird!

I would keep giving him smalls for a few weeks I think. I always weigh all my mice. Maybe you could do that and very gradually increase the size so that maybe he wont even realise they are getting bigger

He's visibly lost the weight he put on over summer now :(

Thanks :) Yeah that's a good idea. the one we tried wasn't a massive leap but obviously too big for him while his belly is acting up.

2 smalls a week, one on weekend, one mid week sound good? Then maybe see if he can keep two down after a while?

I remember when he used to think everything was food, I remember him having a good go at eating my OH's thumb! lol.
He's still calm, touch wood, and hasn't flared up and only get's a bit jumpy of there's a loud noise, so I don't think he's in any discomfort. He's got to be a very hungry boy though. Cos he always tries to eat what we give.

The last one he regurged then re ate it, then regurged then ate ... about three times! Like he couldn't understand what had happened. We took it off him cos he was about to give it another go and it was looking foul and smelling foul, and that couldn't have been doing him any good.
