I just got a Gray-banded Kingsnake from a previous owner who fed it live prey. I want to feed it pre-killed. The person I got it from said it had just come out of hibernation a week ago...the woman tried feeding it a few days ago and it wouldn't eat. I just got the snake yesterday and tried feeding it today and so far, nothing.
I thawed the frozen mouse out as it says to in the instructions. I placed the snake in a different cage I first wiggled the mouse around but the snake wasn't interested. Then I put the mouse in the center of the cage. The snake went over to the mouse and stared at it for about 30 seconds and then slithered away and now it's just doing circles around the cage completely ignoring the mouse.
Any suggestions? |

| Hi, the snake may be a bit stressed out from the move so it's maybe a good idea to give it 7 days to settle into it's new home. Only disturb it for water changes and after 7 days try offering a feed again. |

id leave him quite hun for a few days
let him settle.....get used to his new suroundings, and the smells
i know i dont feel like eating when ive moved home lol |

Okay, thank you. I will wait for about a week and try again and see what happens. Am I doing this right though? Put him in a different cage to feed him than his normal cage? Make sure the "feeding cage" is warm. Thaw out the mouse completely and lower it in the cage with tongs and try wiggling it around in front of him. If that doesn't work then just leave the mouse in the cage with him for a couple hours and leave him alone.
Does all of that sound about right? |

What is this cage you are feeding him in? I always feed mine out of viv but my young caramel is a bad feeder so gets fed in viv. I will eventually try to feed him out of viv also.
I advise feeding in viv, just be careful of ingested substrate, put some kitchen roll in and put mouse on that. I think it's alot to ask of a snake that has always been live fed in viv to suddenly start feeding defrost mice, out of viv and in a new home.

The "cage" that I'm trying to feed him in is just a standard 10-15 gallon aquarium lined with papertowels. I was told not to feed the snake in it's normal cage (when I say cage I mean a glass aquarium type) which is why I have a second cage. Should I try to feed him in his normal cage? |

moving feeding from live to f/t is not always very easy to do. Make sure you heat the mouse to a decent temp, and yes move the mouse about but do not tap the snake with the mouse. To heat the mouse you can have it in a small watertight bag and dip in hot water for a few seconds, or use a hairdryer to warm the mouse up.
I would find out from the previous owner what he fed the snake in (his own tank or out of his tank) originally then that's what I would do. |

| If you feed him live mice for 3-4 weeks, until he gets more settled in, then make the switch to frozen ones, that works much better |

| Grey bands are notoriously difficult when young, live is often the only way to go to get them feeding! As suggested try a few live till your snake eats again then try very warm brained defrost...It may take alot of hard work, and some will never convert to defrost. Do you have access to live prey?? |
