Hi all,
Im picking up my first snake this week a San Luis Potosi Kingsnake (Lampropeltis mexicana mexicana), I was planning to use Eco Earth mixed with a small amount of play sand as the substrate, however various people have warned me off from using this but without really giving me a reason why, so the question I have is would this be a suitable substrate to use for my new snake ?.

| I've used neither of those, but I think the eco earth may hold a lot of humidity, and the sand could cause impaction, and maybe irritate the snakes scales. |

| hi,sand as a substrate is a bad idea for snake as it can be gradulaly ingested causeing impaction in the stomach,have a look at the care sheet which does cover substrates http://www.thekingsnake.co.uk/Mexican_king_snakes_care_sheet.htm |

Thanks for the quick reply guys I had looked through the care sheets on this and various other forums and was looking for something a little more natural regarding substrate.
The eco earth I was planning on using is completly dry and mixed with only a small amount of sand, I have used this mixed with various Tarantulas in the past from simular areas as my king, but I might have to go for something a little less natural.
