Hi all!
I have had "Haku" my albino Cali king for about 6 months now and despite regular handling he is still REALLY nippy. To the point where I think he thinks I am a threat or worse... food. He has bitten me so badly that, despite my best efforts to sit it out, he has actually wrapped his coils around my fingers and attempted to swallow my fingers!!! Don't get me wrong we have our good moments but often he tends to get a get obsessed with over licking parts of my fingers as if to find food and then bites even though my hands are clean and unscented?? I have noticed that he may have retained some of his eye caps as his eyes are not all pink, but have almost a shell around them, if this is the case I guess it explains his edginess but why is trying to eat me? Also is this unsafe for him?

Ideally if he has retained eye caps you want to bath him in water to see if you can get them off. I wouldn't have thoght that eye caps would make him nippy. How do you feed him? Tongs, feeding box? |

Thanks, he does like the bath I don't think I have left him in long enough though.
I use tongs and I also have a log that I place the food one in an attempt to get him to associate the log with food instead of my hands. He eats very quickly and seems to digest very well too, touch wood he has never refused a feed. I currently feed him one fuzz a week, I don't think that this is enough?? |

Retained eyecaps will make him nippy as he wont be able to see properly and will be on the defensive as he will feel vunerable, take him to someone who knows how to remove them. |

I would also try feeding outside the viv- then he won't associate anything coming into the viv as potential food. I use a cat litter tray as a feeding vessel.
Just keep trying and I'm sure he will tame down eventually. Kings are notorious for being feisty.
Try the bath again, but if it doesn't work you'll need to find a vet or experienced reptile keeper like a good shop owner to help you remove them safely. |
