Hey Guys,
I need some more advice.
For the first time I held my Mexican Black last night. I've had him for somewhere around 3 weeks now, he seems very young, about the width of a pencil and a little over a foot long. He has shed once already, and is an extremely aggressive and good eater. Every time I have fed him he eats within moments.
However, despite all of this and hid becoming increasingly active in the tank, he despises being held it seems. When I tried to pick him up he was very skittish and defensive trying to bite. When I finally got him by sliding my hand underneath him he stopped trying to bite.
Yet he continuously tried to get right back in the tank or get away. He did not have regard for being high up from the ground so I held him over his tank. Is it normal for them to be so anti-handling? |

No snake particularly enjoys being handled. They just get used to it. You'll just have to persevere, maybe handling him for 5 minutes twice a day (except, of course, after feeding). Don't worry about getting bit, as it won't hurt at all when the snake is that small. My own MBK was just the same when I got him last August, and he's tamed down nicely (though of my 4 snakes he's the one I 'trust' least)
You could also try leaving a piece of clothing in the tank with him so he can get used to your smell. |

Great, thanks very much for the reassurance. I'm excited to hold him, I think I'll use gloves for now.
As for the piece of clothing, should I just cut a piece of a shirt or something and toss it in? |
