Hi all, I'm new here. I bought my first snake 4 days ago; an Albino California Kingsnake. Everything seems to be ok with him/her, Silas is active and shed the skin earlier today.

My question relates to the vivarium. I have 'him' in a sliding-glass fronted viv and 'he' keeps climbing up the glass and trying to force 'himself' through the gap between the 2 pieces of glass and through where they glass closes against the wooden sides. Is this normal behaviour? Could this be dangerous, and if so what can I do to stop it?

I'd appreciate any advice on this, thanks.

Normal behaviour yes, they are very inquisitive. Not much you can do to stop it apart from make sure the gap isn't big enough for "him" to get through.
Do you have plenty of hidey holes in there?

Absolutely normal behaviour. He may one day realise that he can't get out and then stop trying, or he may do it for years. Nothing to worry about either way.

Thank you for the reassurance. I'm certain he'd never fit through the gaps, just didnt want him to try to hurt himself trying. I have a couple of stone type hides and a large branch that he can climb on or hide behind.

He seems really settled, he shed yesterday and ate today. I thought I was gonna miss him feeding as I put the mouse in and then had to go out but when I got home the mouse was still there, and he ate within 5 minutes of me getting home. He must have been waiting for me

Silas is about 26" long at the moment, I was wondering if any of you could hazard a guess at his age from this? The shop where I got him didn't know his age.

They also said to feed him 1 fuzzy twice a week if that helps any.

I've decided to change Silas' feeding to 2 fuzzies every 5 days before trying him with a small adult, he's taking the 2 well so far.

I got my first proper snakebite the other day, it was my own fault I think he's getting ready to shed and I disturbed him whilst cleaning up a poo. He proper struck for my finger from under his stone, i felt it before I saw him he was that quick. As i'm sure most of you will have found out for yourselves, it doesnt hurt but he drew blood which I didnt expect.

2 fuzzies every 5 days seems a bit much to me, would suggest 2 every 7 days if that is what you are going to do. Although if Silas is able to take small mice it would be better to move him onto 1 small mouse every 7 days.
