Greetings from the high deserts of Utah (USA)! My son and I just got a nice little Mexican Black, freshly shed and shining like midnight. We fed him right after we got him home and are patiently waiting for his meal to settle to say hello. The previous owner had him for a year and a half and he is still small, around 18 inches or so. He feeds well and seems to love rat pinkies, live.
Is it common for a King to strike so aggressively at food? Do I need to fear him striking at me, or is it more that he needs time to settle in and to digest his first meal?
Looking forward to learning more and sharing this experience with you all! |

Kings can be very energetic when it comes to striking for their food, mine from time to time will knock a leg of her food during the strike.
He may he may not strike at you there is no general rule as all snakes are different, The only thing I will say is having been bitten by MBK's in the past is that the shock of the strike was worse than the bite itself.
Dont know if this helps but I generally feed my king in a plastic box away from her Viv, so she doesnt associate hands coming into the viv as a food orientated experience, and she hasnt struck at me yet.
Good Luck |

as regards to the food i would change him to adult mice as he would not be getting the nutrients hes needs to grow from a rat pinky and that probably why hes still small, you want to be aiming for prey the same thickness as the snakes body and he should start to grow |

Thank you GMAC! I will definitely feed him in another container next time, keep the food smells out of his viv.
Hello Gingerpony!
And thanks, Lee. Pinkies seem about the same diameter that he is right now, so you are saying that the mature mice will have different nutrients? And should I continue feeding him live prey? Is that better than two pinkies, then? It's quite something to watch these characters eat! I live mouse would be a whole different game over a helpless pinkie, I would think. |

| If he will take dead prey then that would be alot safer for the snake as mice can fight back,if he wont take defrosted then you could try prekilled, but if you cant just dont leave them unattended |

Looks like my snake, Ninjers, is fine taking frozen adult mice. He ate nicely, has settled in.
He allowed us to handle him last night, was very gentle and curious, with no more nipping. I am so thrilled! He seems a very lovely temperament, curious but a bit cautious.
I cannot get over how amusing it is to watch him. I can see how snake might not be the pet for everyone, but I am loving having him around! |

Wait until it gets to the point where the snake becomes nosy. Fairly often my snakes will just sit hidden away, but as soon as something starts going on outside the viv then they are all of a sudden interested in what's going on. |

| Yeah, he is a nosy little thing. Who would have thought snakes would be nosy? I love it and am amused when he comes out and pokes around. He's getting all settled in and doing great! |
