Posted - 08/06/2012 : 21:15:55 I know this probably sounds daft, but normally in the evenings she's really busy, footling around in her viv, and nosing at the glass to come out. For about 4-5 days now she's been just sitting in her warm hide and barely coming out at all- it's really unusual, and i'm starting to get concerned about it- normally if I open the door she'll be there like a shot, wanting to come out for a nosey round the house, but last night when i opened her viv, she sort of half heartedly poked her nose over the edge then went back in and curled up in her warm hide again. temps are fine, nothing's changed, the only thing I can think of is that last week she had a bit of shed left on her eye/chin, which I had to get off with a damp flannel- might this have upset her? or even- hurt her??? any ideas please? |

Posted - 09/06/2012 : 19:36:37 over 30g is classed as XL or jumbo. One of these every 2 weeks is enough for an adult kingsnake. You should find this size chart useful:-

Posted - 08/06/2012 : 22:27:06 warm temp between 29-32 cold about 20, - i think I've solved the problem though- today was dinner day, when i put the mouse in, she woke up- and went into full on feeding frenzy, striking at the glass when i moved, and there was none of that drag the mouse about for twenty minutes before eating it, it was just GONE in a matter of seconds-
the problem I suspect is just that she's been unnaturally hungry, and I've worked out why..
the bloke who I've bought my mice from the last couple of times has short- moused me...
I asked for 10 medium, I got 10 small- (discovered this the other day when feeding the little corn and baby cali, cos I weighed them- they were all 13g)
tonight when I looked more closely, the so-called 'jumbo' mice my poor hungry girl should have been eating are more like medium/possibly large but not really. I only know for sure cos I still had a rat weaner left in the bottom of the freezer, and in the past a 'jumbo' mouse has been about the same size- these things are really wee, nowhere near the size of the ratty..
I know, I really should've noticed before, but all my snakes eat different sized dinners, so when i buy mice I end up with a bag of varied sizes; and I spose it just wasn't obvious that each respective size was actually one size down or maybe more.
poor girl. she's just had a second so-called 'large' mouse and is still sitting at the end of the viv where i feed her, with a hopeful little nose pressed against the glass...
whats the usual weight of a 'jumbo' mouse? these average out at just under 38 and a half grams... should i offer her a third one? i feel so mean[[edit- she's not had the 'jumbo ones lately, ive been giving her what i thought were large, but are an avergae weight of just under 26 grams, so mediums, as far as i can tell....... |
