I have a 2 to 3 year old Californian King Snake. I’ve had him 2 years and from almost the moment I got him he started refusing to eat! He ate OK for the first 3 weeks and then it started to become a struggle. The shop where I bought him from took him back for a few weeks and discovered he’d got mites. They treated him and he started eating again. I treated his viv but once back with me he stopped again after a couple of weeks, so it’s obviously something I’m doing (or not doing) that’s the problem, but I have no idea what. I check him for mites regularly and treat him routinely so he’s mite free now. He can go months without eating which really worries me, he’s also nowhere near as active as he used to be. He spend all his time curled up asleep under his hide or occasionally in his water bowl. He’s not shedding as often as he was either, I guess because he’s not growing as he should be. His viv is set up exactly the same as his viv at the shop was so I can’t see that there would be a problem with that. I was told by the shop to feed him small rats but he’s never taken them off me. He’ll only take medium mice (and white ones, at that, won't touch any other colour. I must have the only racist snake in the world!). My partner breeds quail and occasionally will feed him a chick which he used to eat, but he’s even refusing them now (I know they’re not as nutritional but I figured it was better than him eating nothing). In the last 6 momths he’s eaten maybe 3 mice. Help! |

I have a huge problem.my snake started getting a pink bump on its butt so I took it to the pet shop where I got her from and they said it was constipation,then my snake stopped eating,its been 5 weeks,I've tried everything,from exposing brain matter-to heating up the tank and putting them alone in a box,my snake just looks at its pray and moves on with life.it hasn't been losing a lot of weight but its not as thick.its the beginning of winter here in SA and I'm so scared that she's sick or something but I have no money for a vet.I tried different mice.but nothing please help. |

Also, if he had mites, did you treat the viv too to get rid of any mites in there and eggs? |

As deadmansfinger has said give us as much housing info as possible, substrate and the likes. Feeding your king mice is adequate ours are just fine on them and growing well.
Also how do you offer foods to the king ie do you feed him in viv or in tub, do you leave mouse in overnight etc. As much info as you can give us the better we may be able to help you out. |

Can you describe your setup? Viv size, what heating you use, what are temps on hot and cold side? Some pictures of the setup would be useful too.
Can you also tell us what length and weight he is? The small rats I have for my 40" long, 1kg royal are up to 160g in weight which seem quite big, but that depends on what size your king is I guess and I also know food size very alot from shop to shop.
