Hi All,
I'm new to this forum but could really do with some advise / peace of mind. Yesterday I re-homed a MBK, he is an adult male appx. 5ft in lenth almost 8 years old. I was told that the previous owner had problems feeding him mice & could only get him to except chicks for the last year. when I got him home I tried out of curiosity 2x small mice & he took them straight away - very surprised.
After handling him I noticed that the ventral scales all along his belly were chipped & looked almost like a retained shed as there are new scales underneath. But the old scales are still connected to the rest of his skin???
There are no obvious signs that it is bothering him & it does not look inflamed or sore just very dry -Although he is sleeping all night in his water bowl??? in the last 24 hours he has started to loose some of the scales I hope this continues.
Any ideas or suggestions please |

thats good news (sort of),you may find that he sheds more often because of this. |

Hi there, thanks again for all your help today. Iv just got back from our new reptile vet. And the good news is he doesnt have mites or scale rot - yippee!!
The problem is by the looks of it that the previous owner ether kept him on a heat mat without a matstat or possibly used a hot rock & he is now recovering from thermal burns.
Iv been told to treat him with regular aloe Vera & he should recover after his next few sheds.

I have used the oil bath method and it worked a treat for my boa, the links below will give you help with what treatment you feel more comfortable with. But I dont see the need for a Vets visit.

Hi there, thanks for your quick response,
Unfortunately I don't know what he was kept on before, the shop I got him from is very well respected & only stocks reptiles, but details were few & far between. The previous lady owner got rid of him due to lack of time.
He is currently in a 4 foot viv & the hot end is averaging 84.degrees & the cool end 74 degrees - he seems to be moving happily between the temps.
Iv checked his water bowl this morning & there are loads of tiny black dots so I think that maybe mistery solved.
Are there any good mite treatments off the shelf or am I better off going to the rep vet??

hi,do you know what he was kept on before?If he is soaking alot it could be the viv is too hot or he could have mites,i would keep him on white kitchen roll for a few weeks so this would be softer on his belly and you will also notice any mite that come off,also look in the water for mites,their like little black dots. |
