Orion has just had his first feed with us, two pinkies. One of the boys was holding the tongs with the first pinkie, I had a hand hovering over the tub ready to catch that verrrrry quick and active snake if he decided to try and bolt again. Snakey got whiff of the pinkie immediately, struck instanstly and constricted. Only, it wasn't the pinkie he had succeeded in hunting, he got my thumb instead.

Now what. So I took the tongs and with my other hand positioned the pinkie close enough for him to notice. Snakey thought about it for a moment, let loose with his mouth and grabbed the pinkie instead, but wouldn't release his hold of my thumb. When I tried gently to pull away, he just tightened his grip. Wish we had the camera ready: I was stuck with a thumb in the feeding box while snakey was enjoying his meal, and he wasn't in any hurry to start working it. Once he decided to do so, didn't take long for pinkie to slide in, and when Orion was finally pushing the mouse down his belly, he also released the captured thumb.

Without drawing blood??
I thought it was a rule to only be a proper snake keeper when blood has been drawn.

** UPDATE **

He has now drawn blood, so I guess it counts. Do we get higher merits when he graduates to taking a finger off?

No blood, I forgot to mention I'm not actually made of that kind of stuff .

He was holding firmly and didn't look like he was having any plans to let go any time soon (most of him was constriced convincingly around what was left of the thumb and he did it so fast there was no time to react) but I suppose the pinkie saved my limb from what he had in mind to do to it next. So not even a mark.

Was there any blood?

At least you got your first tag out of the way now. :)

Give Orion my congratulations.
