Whenever acquaintances chat to me about having snakes they all (well 3 of them anyway) decide now is the time to tell me that 'they' have a friend who had a boa or python of some sort who was mainly allowed to roam free around the house that seemed to be growing but not eating and when they took it to the vet they were told that it was growing in preparation to be able to swallow the owner...

Needless to say I get very irate when someone tells me this...
Not only should a snake be kept in a proper, temp and humidity controlled viv IF the story was true...

But i dont think it is true and unless this 'friend' knows pretty much everyone in the world then i think its bollocks...

Damn i hate people, they just have no idea...

my dad is one of those annoying ppl who automatically think of a massive snake that will kill everyone! drives me insane
jono2411 Posted - 10/07/2009 : 10:17:32
hahaha... i havent heard that one yet!!!
Kehhlyr Posted - 10/07/2009 : 09:24:36
Mind you, how many people have been asked 'What, a King Cobra?' when they say they have a King snake.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've been asked that.

I've heard it too many times now. I stop people half way through when they start telling me it now. Then I ask them who the friend is and suddenly they stop talking.

Drives me mad!

My sister and cousin are convinced that the story of the snake sizing the person up is true and thats what they do. I then had to explain for 10 mins that thats not what they do. They strike and that a big snake like a fully grown python struck you you wouldnt know anything about it till it started constricting the life out of you. That shut them up!!!

I cant stand that story, and I just generaly hate being told anything about snakes by non-keepers.

Lee, tell them they should be more worried about the mexis than the little royal!
jono2411 Posted - 09/07/2009 : 16:05:49
oh lee, i forgot to say... LOL
jono2411 Posted - 09/07/2009 : 16:05:18
the first thing i get asked is "are they venomous?"
........
of course they bloody aren't!!!! That would be like someone saying they had a cat and me saying "oh really? a tiger is it?"
........
seriously, people should think before they ask ridiculous questions...

People are a bit silly when they hear the name 'snake'.

All the thousands of different species in the world yet they automatically think rattler or cobra when they hear the word Snake

im getting ed up with being told about the python that killed the baby in the states, one nieghbour asked if mine are safe,i told them mine are differant and they asked what makes mine differant,i said about 10-15 feet differance.
brookestar Posted - 09/07/2009 : 14:28:13
isnt it based on a story a few years back when some had a female burm that wasnt eating at all and ended up attacking/killing a 3 yr old boy in taiwan or somewhere like that. i may be worng but i remember readin a story on it in a reptile magazine

GP, I applaud your willpower and calmness... I played along a bit the first time but then the 2nd and 3rd I started shouting... a bit embarressing
Sarahmichelle Posted - 09/07/2009 : 13:08:03
Lol funny you should say that. My m8 told me the same story last week ANNND had the audacity to tell me it was someone she knew. I just sort of gaped at her for a few seconds before telling her she was full of s***. Like jono said, it's more the fact that they lie about it being someone they know that gets me lol.
