Hey everyone,
sorry if I am posting this in the wrong section, but I have a heating question...
the heat-lamp bulb that I bought at my local pet store died out on me, and I went ahead and put a spare normal 60 watt household light bulb into the heat lamp:
the temperature gauge reads the correct temperature, and it puts out just about as much light as the old bulb. I only leave it on a few hours of the day on the hot side of my CA banded kingsnake's viv, (as I also have a heat pad) and he seems to be enjoying it just fine.
I was just curious as to whether or not its not a good idea to use regular lightbulbs? (they are much cheaper than the "pet-store brand" lightbulbs.

It shouldn't make a difference, since king snakes don't need specialist UV or anything, so if it's just for light then a household bulb will be fine.
In fact I have energy saving bulbs in with mine. Cheaper on electricity then too |

The lamp does have a cage guard, and I do have thermostats on both the cooler and the warmer side. Thanks for the clarification!

Hi Cali,
My honest opinion would be to scrap the Heat Bulb, especially if there is no thermostat on it at all, even more so, if there is no cage or anything to prevent the snake from burning itself. The heatmat you have underneith is sufficent for the snake. Most, if not all snakes do not need light, the light in the room is enough to give the snake a photo-period, i.e. know when to sleep, eat and be active.
Although, If you do want to use it, a standard household bulb is sufficient. But If you do have to use it, I'd reccomend a Thermostat and a Bulb Guard/Cage.
