Two differences I've been able to identify so far are that kings prefer a somewhat higher temp at their warm end of the viv than corns, and that I can expect higher chances of being lovingly gripped -- by teeth   .
Is there anything important I'm missing? We've been dealing with corns for a little while so have the basics there, but I'm wondering if there is anything king-specific I need to know before the two black ladies arrive here on Friday.
Btw, care sheet talks about cool end at room temp. What is considered room temp?

you are right, as far as general care is concerned kings are very similar to corns, roughly the same size, same diet adn humidity requirements, the differences i have found are that kings are more inquisative and they seem to be more devensive about their vivs,; this, combined with their love of food, means that you may be getting a cheeky nip every now and again, but, like corns, it does little to no damage so is not something to be concerned about.
Cool end is somewhere around 22-23 degrees for my kings and milks and they seem to be doing fine.
They do like to burrow as Bioshock said so deep substrate is nice, though not a neceassry part.
Being as you are getting mexican black kingsnakes (form mexico obv.. :P) they will require a higher warm spot than corns, i got for 32oC for mine, and it seems to do them well, active and a joy to observe.
Othen than that I can't really think of anything else to tell you apart from to be wary not to overfeed them, a mexi black will not refuse food ever and as such it is down to you to recognise what is and isnt an appropriate level of food intake, we all want them to grow big and strong but lets face it... who wants a morbidly obese snake?

Something i have noticed with my King Snake is that it likes to dig far more than any of my other snakes, so having deeper substrate (maybe not over the warm end) will certainly be appreciated by your two little ones.
As for room temperature, i personally keep mine at a genuine room temperature... in my room without any heating it is generally around 20c at this time of year. |
