Just thought I'd show you what I do with mine and maybe save you some money.
Large bag bought from my local garden centre for £4.99.
I separate it into large handfuls in individual sandwich bags - 15 here from that 1 bag.
When squashed flat without air they take up about the same space as a loaf of bread. Then they go into the freezer.
When needed I take one out and put it into a baking tray.
Then I pour boiling water over it and leave for a couple of minutes.
It soaks up the boiling water and comes back to life. All bugs killed by the freezing and boiling water.
Squeeze out excess water.
And its ready to use.
I use 2 or 3 a month so that £4.99 should last me for 6 months  |

You can use it for general hiding places too.
Not so much with a king because they don't really like a lot of humidity, but with our Rainbow boa we have it on top of the substrate to hold in the moisture and allow Ruby to hide under. |

Yeah... I know that there is a media called Perlite. Not used it myself. Not quite sure if it is for certain reptiles or an alternative to Vermiculite.
The peat and sphagnum moss sounds a good idea. If i breed snakes at all i shall have to try it out! Thanks for advice and Info.

I use peat and sphagnum moss mix, sometimes vermiculite. Peat is wonderful stuff - due to it's acidity it prevents mold growing on the eggs ;). In truth, there's lots of incubating media you can use though :) |

Probably verm, incubating eggs do need quite high humidity. |

What would you use to incubate Kingsnake eggs, just for curiousity?

Generally verm is only used with incubating eggs, but someone might know if it's ok to use. Doesn't it retain a lot of moisture though? Because kings don't need extra humidity unless shedding because they are prone to R.Is (respiratory infections). In the wild Cali kings would live in a warm, dry climate so it's best to mimic that if you can.

I don't know if you can use vermiculite with snakes.
I do with my Leopard Geckos.
