Posted - 30/05/2009 : 15:52:44 Hi guys
My names mat and I've just joined the forum looking for some advice and any pointers as to whether I should take on my first snake.
I have been offered a Variable King Snake (about 2ft long I think) www.3dvisions.co.uk/temp/king.jpg - Currently its homeless as it was found by the RSPCA.
How old would you say this snake is?
Would a 2-3ft enclosure be ok ?
How often would it feed ?
Any other info much appreciated.
Many thanks Mat |

Nice one. I'm hoping to get out and find a few snakes this year. Only ever seen one snake in the wild |

Posted - 01/06/2009 : 09:25:57 they do most of their growing up to about 3-5 years of age (depending on species again) then their growth rate slows right down but they do continue to grow thoughout the rest of their life |

Posted - 01/06/2009 : 00:41:07 Ok, many thanks.
3-4 feet....cool :-) Sounds a perfect size.
So do they grow throughout their lives or hit fully grown at a certain age?
I'm pretty excited by the prospect. It seemed like a lovely snake. I also got to hold a 5-6ft Indigo Snake which was just the most awesome thing I've ever seen. The skin was fabulous. |

Posted - 31/05/2009 : 16:48:01 itll probably get 3-4 ft as for aging that is a bit difficult as it all depends on the snakes growth rate, and how much it was fed etc... |

Posted - 30/05/2009 : 18:58:47 Thanks for the link Jono, nice to know a little about the natural background of these snakes too.
So really this snake shouldnt get longer than about 3ft !? Is there any way of aging it other than size ?
Cheers Mat |

Posted - 30/05/2009 : 18:34:55 looks like a great choice! a 2-3ft viv would be fine, probably feed an appropriatly sized mouse every 7 days and check the care sheets for any other info... |
