Hi, I got a four month old Florida king a few days ago and was advised to not attempt to handle her for at least a couple of weeks so she has time to calm down. But she shed so I did have to pick her up to check on her (as advised by the shop) but she seemed quite timid, which I expected. As I obviously want her as comfortable as possible is there anything I can do to prepare her for being handled such as getting her used to my scent etc. I won't be handling her for another couple of weeks so she's calm but is there anything extra I can do?

The sock thing really worked well with my corn I can second that. Ive got a new king and shes been really defensive when we try to get her out but I just quickly scoop her up and sit down and she soon calms down when shes in your hands. x |

Thanks, I'll start that soon because she does seem relaxed in her viv. I'll do the sock thing, feed her, give it 48hrs then start handling. Thanks for the advice, you guys are really great :)

I would just take her out for 15 mins a day and let her crawl through your hands. Sit down while handling her so you're not dangling her way up in the air and also incase she jumps out your hands. Over time she'll calm down, it just takes time. I don't believe you need to leave her any longer. A week is more than enough time for a young snake to settle in. |

I did hear this sock thing and I think i'll try it tomorrow. Also when I did first handle her she was in shed just to check there was none left on her tail (the was, so glad I checked) so that might have been part of it.
I will be handling her regularly, but we'll start slow as she's my first and she's only young and I doubt she's been handled much.
At the moment I'm on chippings but I'm popping back to the shop to buy some aspen tomorrow as the general opinion on here seems to favour it. |

Can always try the sock.. basically carry a sock around with you for a day then putting it in her home.. or you could just touch the substrate depending what your using obviously will only work if your using alpen or similar just rub it between your fingers.. but most say its a week generally for a settling in period if that make ya feel any better :-)
she will get used to you anyway specially if your going to be regularly handling her. |
