Hi guys,
i am looking to get my first kingsnake in a few weeks and am in split minds about what to put him in. Some people say its best to start them in a RUB or faunarium then move them onto a larger enclosure and some say a viv is fine straight away (after all the wild is as big as it gets).
whats your opinions guys?

That is a fair point, however Vivarium's are easier to escape from. Captive snakes do prefer to feel more secure also, in my opinion anyway. A young snake will only use one area of a large cage anyway, so it's really not worth it. The stress will result in the snake not feeding, nine times out of ten.

Definitely start with a RUB or faun. Large spaces can stress your hatchling out and then it may stop eating and get very defensive and bitey. I know that the wild is huge but a hatchling snake is very near the bottom of the food chain and will hide for the vast majority of the time. A viv will make your hatchling feel vulnerable. Make sure that you have at least two hides in your RUB/faun as well. One in the warm end and one in the cool so that your hatchling can thermoregulate without feeling vulnerable. Hope that helps |
