i have a 1.5 foot (almost 2 foot) grey banded king snake and i want to get him into a bigger viv. at the moment he has a starter plastic viv (35cmX20cmX20cm WxDxH)
the one im looking at his the exo-terra PT2610(60cmx45xcm45cm WxDxH) would it make him uncomfortable if i was to move him into this?
he is 1 and a half year/s old |

ok thanks for the help, iv just ordered it and it should be coming in the next few days. i will post some pics up when he's all settled in and stuff |

Keep it simple interms of Decor. I'd use Aspen bedding, A Few hides, be that Exo Terra Caves or Cork Bark, or if your really tight, Cardboard box's of various sizes (obviously nothing bigger then what the snake is once curled up). As with Glass Vivariums, the waterfalls are no no. They are a heaven for bacteria, the things are bloody difficult to clean and I've heard fatalities of snakes getting caught in them, and unable to escape.
So Basicly;
Cover Three Sides (Back front and Sides. I'd also remove the Exo Terra Poly Background, as snakes can get trapped behind there.)
Use about 3-4" of Aspen as substrate (this aids as a hide to, and they build tunnels)
A minimum of two hides (One on each side, warm and cool. Ideally two on each side)
A water bowl that is large enough for the snake to soak in (ideally a ceramic or solid color, so you can see mites in the bottom).

One thing you could do would be to cover 3 sides of the glass tank with cardboard or something so that the snake feels a bit more secure.
As for the waterfalls, I'm not sure that they are intended for snakes....I think they are for lizards that won't drink standing water.
I'd advise against the Exo Terra Reptile Dens as well as it can be quite hard to get quick access to the animal when you need to/ |

thanks for the advice its been really helpful. sorry trianglum but im going to have to get the glass one because its the only one i can afford as im getting it cheap off of a friend.
as for the contents of the viv, whats the best for it? can i have a waterfall or is that too much? i was thinking of getting a snake cage but should i get the medium one or the small? and i was also thinking in getting one of those reptile cages which are on the side of the glass and are stuck on by magnets, or will he not fit into one of those? |

Yes. The reason I say yes has nothing to do with the size of the tank itself, more of the fact it is a glass tank. A glass tank has lots of pro's and con's, but your main concern is stress. And from experience, I've founds snakes do well in sheltered cages rather then an open (as such) cage, visible from all sizes. Personally I use tubs, However the tub's I use are glazed, preventing me from seeing in, aswell the snake from seeing out, in theory feeling more secure. Obviously people do keep snakes within glass tanks, although I wouldn't reccomend it. Especially for such shy snakes like L.alterna.
If you were going to upgrade, I'd go for a 3ft Wooden Vivarium. This will do the snake for the rest of it's life and feel alot more secure.

Hi Ash, if your snake is nearly 2' then I would say it is time to move him to a bigger viv. The general rule is that the snake should not be lnoger than the length+width of the viv. You may find that your snake goes off food for a couple of weeks while he settles in to his new environmetnt, on the other hand he may just carry on as normal. Let us know how you get on  |
