in the DIY forum section there is a thread called "How to Prepare Sphagnum Moss"

is sphagnum moss a good substrate for my cali king? if so, why must you go through the procedure of freezing it and thawing it with boiling water, does it come from the store with bugs or bacteria?

I agree about the cost of small bags, they do not make economical sense. 20kg is about 44lb. 5lb is about 2.3kg.

I searched for that Aubiose and think it's only found in the UK :/ but some other natural horse bedding I found runs $11 for a 5lb bag, (sorry don't know how many kg that is lol) I'll have to check it out thanks for the idea!

I dunno, it just seems to me one little bag of wood shavings should definitely not cost 15 bucks :P

There is a product across here called Aubiose, its basically a horse bedding that is virtually identical to aspen but is a lot cheaper. I can get a 20kg sack for around £13 but I don't know if its availabe over there? Might be worth looking for it or something similar

oh wait a minute, you meant cleaning poop.... i thought you meant you can clean all the aspen so you dont have to keep buying new...

how great would that be? never have to buy more substrate

oh ok thanks for the info! ill be sure to use some if Oreo has some shedding troubles.

lpbldg18, i have been using Aspen too but i've been replacing it once a month with brand new aspen, it is getting so expensive!!! how do you clean the used aspen??

The sphagnum moss is sued to create a humid hide when your snake is in shed. The reason for freezing/boiling it is simply a precaution as there could be potentially harmful bugs living in it and this process will kill them

I find ASPEN the easiest to use. easy to clean!! most snakes seem to like to burrow in it too.

Moss is onnly really used to create a moist hide to help the snake with the shedding process.

I'd say no, as it holds lots of moisture and it will eep the humidity high. Unless you really dry it out first
