Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum but will be keeping in my favourites as its a great source of info

Anyway heres my problem. I've just bought a desert king snake that was born November last year. I get the snake on Friday but I have tried to set up my vivarium today. Its a glass vivarium 2ft in length with aspen substrate and hiding places at both ends. The heat mat is attatched outside the vivarium on one of the sides of the glass as I believe the heat will radiate through the glass.

Will this set up be OK till I can get a thermostat and then I can put the heat mat under the substrate?

Thanks for any help in advance

Heatmats don't heat the air so sticking one on the side of the viv will only warm the glass on the side, not the air inside. A thermostat is essential to stop your snake from getting burned so make sure you get one before your snake arrives. Congrats on the purchase, a king is a cracking choice

the heatmat wants to UNDER the viv not on the side, some heatmats need airflow underneath them so check the packaging/instructions if you still have them

aspen is quite a good insulator so make sure the layer over where the heatmat is is really thin and your thermostat and thermometer/thermometer probe should be measuring the temp on top of the substrate avove the heatmat

Welcome to the forum Summersniki, An unstatted (made up word but think you know what i mean) mat gets very hot and could potentially crack the glass, would definately suggest that you get a stat before you collect your King.
