Hello all!
i have a mexican milksnake (roxy) and its a wonderful pet! i've had it for about 3 weeks now and love it! it is my first snake as a pet!
My question is, i have a heating light that works well, but i also have a heating mat that i haven't used yet because it seems to get TOO hot and i dont want to burn my snake! any suggestions? will it get hot enough to burn my snake? thanks!

Its a glass tank,and its on the bottom of the left side, i have a hide there. i turned it on the lowest temp. you can and she moves to the cool side again, the heating bulbs works good, keeps it at 90 during the day, then i cool it to 80-83 during the night. she moves away from the heating pad when i turn it on. not sure why! |

Where you place the thermostat probe will affect how warm the heatmat gets. Are you using a digital thermometer placed on the heatmat to monitor temps? Thermostat dials aren't that accurate for measuring temps so you need to use a thermometer to check the temp |

Hi there,
What temperature are you setting the heatmat too? Where is the probe placed from the Thermostat. My honest opinion is to scrap the heatbulb, they usually use alot more electricty then a Heatmat, and most of the heat from the light is wasted. I only use 'bulbs' (as such) when heating a large vivarium, talking 6 square feet or more. But this is done by a Ceramic Bulb, which doesn't emit light.
Your aiming for 80-90°F on the heated side. If you are not achieving this currently, fiddle about with the Thermostat and the position of the probe. I place the probe where the level of the snake will usually be. Be aware that Milksnakes like to dig, So I'd place it on the bottom. What sort of enclosuer is it housed in? Wooden Vivarium? Glass Tank? Plastic Tub? And where is the heatmat, Inside the enclosure, underneith outside?
On a serous note, your snake is not going 'not like' the heatmat at all. Nine times otu of ten, it's probably to hot for her. Maybe not enough hides on the heated side? Or a larger hide from the cooler side, making her feel less secure?

Update!! igot a thermostat and used it, i put the stat at med. and roxy moved all the way to the far end against the glass on the cool side, i kept putting it lower and lower and she still goes all the way to the cool end, then when i turn it off she is back to the Warmer side where the mat is. I dont think she likes the heat mat at all! any suggestions? |

All heat mats just plug in but you need a thermostat to regulate them. The thermostat plug into the wall socket and then you plug the heat mat in to the thermostat. Heres a link to the one I use with heat mats

The heat mat i have you just plug it in and it warms up. i turned it on last night and roxy moved to the very far cool end of the tank, then a few hours after i turned it off and she went back to the warm side again, not too sure she likes the mat, any thoughts/suggestions? |

Welcome to the forum!
As Gingerpony says, you should have a thermostat to control any heat source that you use to prevent your snake from overheating. Also, you say that you have a heating light - do you have a gurad around it? A snake can easily get burnt if it touches an unguarded lamp. |

it won't get too hot if running through a thermostat..........have you got one to control both heat sources as they really are an essential bit of kit |
