So I got my Mex Black today and within an hour of putting him in his new cage he was poking his head out of the warm hide and within 4 hours he settled into a new post on the top of the cage under a lamp that was the same temp as the warm hide. For the last 3 hours he has been exploring the cage. top to bottom.

I was a bit worried at first that his cage was too big, is this a sign that he is comfortable in his setup OR that he is nervous or scared and I should move him to a smaller setup? He's about 15" (40cm) pretty much a baby.

The setup is an 18x18x18 exo-terra terrarium with both cold and warm hides and aspen substrate.

I'm taking Otho out of the 18x18"(48x48cm) viv. After everything I've read here its just not smart to have him it that big a viv yet. I'm putting him in a shoebox size rub until he ready to upgrade.

tanks, I had thought it was the melanic phase of thayeri.
But the correct name of subspecies is nigrita, not nigritus. Nigrita like the rolling stones song(hey negrita)!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lampropeltis_getula_nigrita

Sorry for the questions, but in Italy we use only the latin name.

The small white hide on the right is heated at the same temp as the the lamps at the top, about 30C during the day and 28C at night. The tree hide and the other hide is about 25C during the day and 23C at night. He seems to prefer the lamp during the daytime. I guess he likes the small space he can crawl into. I introduced him to the small warm hide when I first got him, but he quickly found the top of the tank. I saw him in the cold one today for a short while. He seems pretty curious for the most part.

Exploring is natural, but if the measurements are in inches (18"x18") then it does sound like the viv is too big for your Mexi. Ideally you move him to a smaller viv, but you can pack the one you have now with loads of hides, folliage, things that would provide him with many options for hiding.
