Posted - 01/01/2010 : 22:44:03 Hi, I recently came to be in possession of a snake of some type, and I can't identify it!!
It was previously owned by my mother who rescued it as unnwanted by an associate.
It seems to be in perfectly good health and is active and apparently happy. The only thing is that my mother was feeding it five small pinkies every month (all at once) which I'm sure is not right.
I have a Ball Python and a Bearded Dragon so am a little more learned in the field of reptile care: and as such I offered to take care of him(?).
Does anyone know the best and most reliable means of identifying snakes?
It is definitely non-venomous (99.9% sure) and is very docile. It is not a strike feeder. I am quite sure that it is a corn/king/milk of some kind.
The markings are black head with bands that from head down follow this sequence: Black, white, black, red, black white, black etc etc.
Any ideas??!! |

the photos that show his banding are nearer the end
Hi guys, thanks for all the great help!! The link above shows a very close approximation of his markings. The 6th picture down is almost him only his head is completely black and the black and white bands are slightly thicker. |

Posted - 01/01/2010 : 23:12:41 Take a look here http://www.thekingsnake.co.uk/king_snake_photos.html and see if you can identify your snake. I'm getting the impression it's a milk snake. Definitely doesn't sound like a corn.
You are right, five pinkies in one go once a month is not a good routine. The care sheets are here: http://www.thekingsnake.co.uk/king_snake_care_sheet.htm so once you identify your snake take a look there for anything you want to know.
Any questions, we're here.
