Im looking at getting a mex king sometime soon.
What do i need to do?Can they live on a heat mat or do they have to have a spot lamp?
What do they eat?

Yeah take no notice about the reputation they have they are sweet hearts
lots of gentle handling and you will be fine

There are so many different species of king that the choice will have to be made by you. As for their attitude they all tend to start off being very defensive but calm down quickly with regular handling

I got bitten by a black mex before now but have heard that others are ok. Ive held an alterne king and they seem really nice. I want to get either one. What one would you all suggest

i keep mine the same as my corn.Use a mat not a lamp and dont believe people about them being fiesty, mine were but are as soft as butter now

They are very similar to corn snakes.
Most people either have corns or kings as 'starter' snakes due to the relative ease of their care.
Although someone did once start a rumour that kings can be a bit more feisty than corns, which I don't believe because both mine are as soft as something that proverbially soft.

Standard setup required is the same as a corn, viv, mat+stat, mice for whatever feeding routine you decide to put them on.
Spot lamp, personally no, but i've known people to use them. But a decorative guarded lamp will be fine just to light the viv.
