Hello! My husband and I had been thinking for a long time now of getting a snake but in the process of getting a puppy, moving house then getting married it just never happened.
I saw that someone I knew was selling their pet snake due to family commitments and took the opportunity to suggest to my husband that we should take on the snake.

He is a 1 year old Arizonian King snake, about 2ft long (ish) and is a beautiful red with the regular black and white stripes. He looked and felt healthy (though I am not an expert I think I would recognise a listless, unhealthy snake) and was fine to handle. We had been told that he wasn't so keen on males, but it was more of a case that the current owner's partner wasn't so keen on him so winds him up. This wont be a problem for us though we are going to make sure my husband handles him enough so he's comfy with him (he was perfectly fine with him last night, even going up his sleeve!)

The viv he is in is a little big for him, but not stupidly big. We're thinking of putting in a couple more hiding places for him. We've been told he is a good eater, normally, but hasn't eaten much since christmas. I've looked up feeding habits and wonder if this is because it's winter. When we get him on saturday I am going to weigh him.

Only thing I'm not to sure on is in his viv he has a heat lamp. There are thermometers in the viv and a dimmer on the light, as well as cut off points if it gets to hot etc but I'm wondering if it might not be better to replace the heat lamp with the heat mat, see if more a controlled temp might help his feeding.

I am excited and nervous about getting this snake (can't believe husband agreed!) but am looking forward to getting to know him and allowing him to get to know us. I'll admit I'm not looking forward to feeding (husband had offered to 'help' until I get used to it)

I will post pictures up when I get him :) He is currently called Percey but if the current owners will allow us then we're changing his name to Vladimir (we have a dog called Boris, so a snake called Vladimir just seems to fit!!)

Hello and welcome

Hi and welcome! I have two arizona mountain kings and the male can be fussy with food so I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. Mine has only recently come out of brumation so hadn't had food for over 3 months and still hasn't fed yet but I know he will when he's ready.

We're only waiting until Saturday because my husband works lates and wants to be here when he comes lol. So that makes it more frustrating!

hi and welcome, the worst part of getting a new one ...is the waiting
MrsBlister Posted - 15/02/2011 : 17:00:40
Not got him yet. Saturday. All I've got is pictures his current owner sent me on her phone. And when I went to meet him I was so taken I just didn't think to get my phone out.

I am literally sitting on my hands now because all day I've been looking up snakes! I'm already doing my mums head in and I don't even live with her! Husband tolerates me because he loves me. haha. Soo excited. Going to buy some things to go in his vis, at the moment there isn't too much in it and we have three cats who like like to sit and stare! haha.

Hi and welcome.
To be honest if the setup came with heatlamp and stat to control the heat lamp then i'd leave it as it is. Heating via lamp or mat is totally down to preference. So long as the lamp is guarded then I see no issue with that.

And where are the pics?????

Hi and welcome to the forum.

My king snake is still only little so he is kept in a 9L rub (really useful box) and has a heatmat and a few hides.

Feeding I think is the best part of owning a King snake! They are great feeders and are awsome to watch as they usually strike and constrict really well. I'm still new to kings so can't really help with your questions but someone else should be along later :)
